Bikes and Elections
First official bike ride of the season. I ignore the fact that it is March 10 and 60 degrees as I climb on the saddle. Hooray for climate change, it means I am out earlier! I have high hopes for the season ahead. I will be riding every day and by the end of May, slimmed and tanned, riding 30 miles a day.
By May we should have a good idea if Trump, Cruz or Kasich will be the Republican candidate. I don’t want to take any chances on Trump. If all the angry people show up to vote I’m afraid he could be elected.
Analysts tell us there is a large middle and lower class electorate who feel ripped off by globalization. They think it’s a rigged game that America is losing. I can see this in the industrial midwest where manufacturing jobs have disappeared. And yet “an American having the average income of the bottom U.S. decile is better-off than 2/3 of world population.”
America is an experiment in equality and freedom where democratic principles guide us as an electorate to meet the needs of the majority. It shouldn’t be rigged with one group against another. It’s meant to be an amalgam designed to take care of all. If America is not making the grade we need to craft fairer policies that are inclusive and leave no group behind. Exclusionary proposals that suggest deporting all immigrants, excluding all Muslims from entering and killing the children of our enemies are anger-baiting, fear-mongering ideas.
I see America long on advantages and short on deficits, even with the widening gaps between rich and poor.
But some Trump supporters are just randomly mad people. Like a biker on NPR who had never bothered to register to vote before this election but was now on the Trump train. He said something like “I never registered to vote before. They were all worthless, but Trump is alright.” This is sad sad sad. Who are these people who abandoned the system before they ever cast a single vote? This guy thought Trump spoke his language. What language is that? The language of bullying, stereotyping and fear? The language of insults to body parts and female processes. The language of the “unspoken”! The language of the never should be spoken.
I turned on the last GOP debate and thought I had the wrong channel. Is this the World Wrestling Foundation? Are we no better than this?
